Description

Two Nereids watching fishermen sail at dawn.
Watercolour, ink, ps.

Private commission.

In ancient Greek mythology, Nereids are sea nymphs, dauthers of Nereus and Doris. They often accompany Poseidon, the god of the sea, and can be friendly and helpful to sailors fighting perilous storms, as the Argonauts find the Golden Fleece.
Individually they also represented various facets of the sea, from salty brine, to foam, sand, rocky shores, waves and currents, in addition to the various skills possessed by seamen. The Nereides dwelt with their elderly father Nereus in a silvery cavern at the bottom of the Aegean Sea. They were popular figures in Greek literature. The best known of the Nereids were Amphitrite, consort of Poseidon (a sea and earthquake god); Thetis, wife of Peleus (king of the Myrmidons) and mother of the hero Achilles; and Galatea, a Sicilian figure loved by the Cyclops Polyphemus.

Beautiful. It has quite relaxed atmosphere, something about the colour palette, their expressions, sky and setting sun.
